Get this from a library! Satellite image atlas of glaciers of the world. South America. [Richard S Williams, Jr.; Jane G Ferrigno; Geological Survey (U.S.);]. The total area of the 24 glaciers is square kilometers. All are small except for Gran Glaciar Norte on Citlaltépetl, which has an area of 9 square kilometers. The glaciers on all three volcanoes have been receding during the 20th century. (Williams & Ferrigno USGS Prof. Paper J-3).   The distribution of glaciers and the total glacierized surface area in each region of South America are summarized in Table The methods and the standards used to compile glacier areas vary between the regions (or authors). Some include only inventoried glaciers, whereas others include estimates of unin-ventoried glaciers. Glaciers in South America develop exclusively on the Andes and are subject to the Andes various climatic regimes namely the Tropical Andes, Dry Andes and the Wet from this there is a wide range of altitudes on which glaciers develop from m in the Altiplano mountains and volcanoes to reaching sealevel as tidewater glaciers from San Rafael Lagoon (45° S) and southwards.

This paper examines new geomorphological, chronological and modelling data on glacier fluctuations in southernmost South America in latitudes 46–55°S during the last glacial–interglacial. Glaciers exist on every continent except Australia.
